Why made Colin choose this career pathway?
Colin
chose this career pathway as he wanted to become a fully qualified
craft baker and to be able to earn
a wage whilst also
completing a qualification. Colin had previously worked in a frozen
food manufacturing company but his aim was to become a fully qualified
and trained craft baker. Colin was supported in gaining his qualification
by his employer Reid’s Bakery, who provided his workplace
training, his Training Advisor Graham Shewan from SAMB (Scottish
Association of Master Bakers) who assessed him and gave him support
during his qualification and the Local Enterprise Company Caithness
and Sutherland Enterprise who provided the funding for his training.
MA In Craft Bakery
To complete his modern apprenticeship, Colin achieved 12 units
in his level 2 SVQ, 8 units in his level 3 and 5 units of core
skills. Colin was the second person in Scotland to have achieved
an MA in Craft Bakery.
Colin’s Job
Colin is employed at Reid’s
Bakery in Thurso and as he has now completed his modern apprenticeship,
he is recognised as a fully qualified craft baker. He is in charge
of production in the absence of senior management from the company,
he works during the night and finishes at around 6am. The types
of goods that Colin manufactures are bread rolls, bread, puff pastry
products, cakes, doughnuts and he finishes a range of products.
