Skillseekers
The Skillseekers programme in Scotland is
successful in supporting high quality training for thousands of
young Scots. The programme is designed to recruit and train school
or college leavers, aged16 years and upwards, who wish to make a
career start in the baking industry. There
are many groups of people who will be attracted to the Skillseekers
programme;
- Those who want to work in bakery production
as bakery operatives
- Those who want to work in the bakery shop
working in retail, preparation of take away foods or coffee shop/cafe

- Those who want to work in technical bakery
production/management by training as a Craft Baking Modern Apprentice
- Read Colin's

- Those who want to supervise in the bakery
shop working in retail, by training as a Retail Modern Apprentice
Employment is a mandatory requirement of
the skillseekers and modern apprenticeship training programmes.
Modern Apprenticeships programmes are demanding and are designed
for those who are aiming high and are capable of achieveing high
level skills and qualifications. It is ideal for those who want
to become the skilled technicians and managers of tomorrow. For

Key features of the Skillseekers option
- (Bakery/Craft Baking Operative)
- Achieves a Bakery SVQ from one of the
pathways at level 2
- Delivers food hygiene and safety training
- Government recognised and support funded
through Local Enterprise Companies (LECs)
- Based upon a signed Training Agreement
and Individual Training Plan which is regularly monitored and
reviewed
- Allows transfer and progression onto a
Modern Apprenticeship programme
Key features of the Skillseekers option
- (Retail Operative)
- Achieves an SVQ in Bakery (Retail &
Service) or an SVQ in Retail Operations at level 2
- Delivers food hygiene and safety training
- Government recognised and support funded
through Local Enterprise Companies (LECs)
- Based upon a signed Training Agreement
and Individual Training Plan which is regularly monitored and
reviewed
- Allows transfer and progression onto a
Modern Apprenticeship programme
Key features of the Skillseekers option
- (Distribution Operative)
- Achieves an SVQ in Bakery (Distribution)
or an SVQ in Distribution and Warehousing Storage Operations at
level 2
- Delivers food hygiene and safety training
- Government recognised and support funded
through Local Enterprise Companies (LECs)
- Based upon a signed Training Agreement
and Individual Training Plan which is regularly monitored and
reviewed
- Allows transfer and progression onto a
Modern Apprenticeship programme
Key features of the Skillseekers option
- (Bakery Modern Apprenticeship)
- Achieves a Bakery SVQ from one of pathways
at level 3
- Achieves core skills at Intermediate Level
1 in the following areas
Communication, working with others, problem solving, information
technology and numeracy
- Delivers food hygiene and safety training
- Government recognised and support funded
through Local Enterprise Companies (LECs)
- Based upon a signed Modern Apprenticeship
Agreement and Individual Training Plan which is regularly monitored
and reviewed
- Allows progression onto technical and
management jobs or progression into higher education
Key features of the Skillseekers option
- (Retail Modern Apprenticeship)
- Achieves Retail operations level 3 (level
2 optional)
- Achieves core skills at Intermediate
Level 1 in the following areas
Communication, problem solving, information technology and numeracy
- Achieves core skill unit working with
others at intermediate Level 2
- Government recognised and support funded
through Local Enterprise Companies (LECs)
- Based upon a signed Modern Apprenticeship
Agreement and Individual Training Plan which is regularly monitored
and reviewed
- Allows progression onto management jobs
or progression into higher education
Skillseekers Recruitment
It is important that potential recruits have a clear awareness of
what it is like to work in the baking industry before you sign up
to a Skillseekers programme. Advice and guidance from the Careers
Service is available, and it is also advisable to talk with employers
or training providers. Ideally, it is best if you have some work
experience or employment in a bakery company before signing up.
The following is a guide to the sort of attributes that employers
look for when recruiting Skillseekers;
- Awareness of and desire to work in the
industry
- Demonstrates team capabilities, a reasonable
communicator with inter-personal skills
- Clean and tidy appearence, sensitive to
good hygiene/safety practice
- Physically capable for bakery work (consider
skin conditions/allergies to food or environment)
- Commitment to learning, self development
and achievement both on and off the job.
- Possess evidence of sufficient previously
aquired educational competence. Evidence of this might include
standard or higher grade certificates or other educational experience
and general achievements within or outwith school
There are no barriers to anyone undertaking
a Skillseekers programme in the baking industry on the grounds of
gender or ethnic origin. The Bakery Training Council expects all
employers using this programme to meet their reponsibilities under
the Disability Discrimination Act, Health and Safety at Work Act
